The dunes do not stop at the beach. They go into the sea.
Which Sandwich Harbour 4×4 actually gets up the dune face, and which turns round at the lagoon. What a morning with the seals at Pelican Point costs. Whether Sossusvlei is worth the drive from Windhoek. Reviews of every tour you can book in Namibia.

One off the lagoon, one up the dune belt, one in the capital, one at a waterhole. What each costs and what the people who took it say.
01The lagoon morningMarine Big 5 Luxury Catamaran TourCape fur seals haul themselves onto the deck and dolphins run the bow. The most popular morning on the water in Namibia.

04The waterholeEtosha National Park: Full or Half-Day Game DriveIn the dry months Etosha keeps no water on the pan, so the game walks to the springs at its edge. You park, and you wait.
At Sandwich Harbour the Namib stops being a desert and becomes a coastline.
The dune belt south of Walvis Bay has no road into it. You go along the beach at low tide in a 4×4, or you do not go. Three kinds of day run on that sand, and the difference between them is how much of it you get.

Namibia is far bigger than it looks on an itinerary.
Swakopmund to Sossusvlei is a full day behind the wheel. Windhoek to Etosha is another. Almost everything on the coast fits inside a morning and almost nothing inland does, so the honest first question is how many days you actually have.

Three days and up
Sossusvlei and Etosha done properly, on a run that most often starts in Windhoek.
Sossusvlei and Etosha are the other Namibia, and neither is a day trip.
Dead camelthorns standing in a white clay pan at Deadvlei, Dune 45 climbed before the heat arrives, and a salt flat wide enough to read from orbit. These run long, they run inland, and they are worth the days they take.
Three things this desert does that no other desert does.
Sand is everywhere. A desert that drinks fog, feeds a seal colony and ends in surf is not.

The Namib drinks fog
No rain worth the name falls on this coast. What the dunes get instead is fog rolling in off the cold Benguela current most mornings, and an entire food chain lives on it: a palmato gecko with webbed feet for sand, a sidewinder that swims through the slip face, a white lady spider that cartwheels down a dune to escape. A guide reads the night’s tracks and turns the sand over, and what looked like an empty slope stops being empty.

A seal colony you paddle into
Tens of thousands of Cape fur seals live on the sand spit that closes off Walvis Bay lagoon, next to a cast-iron lighthouse that has been there since the German administration. Kayaks put in at first light while the water is still flat, and the young seals come out to the boats on their own account. Nobody feeds them. They will chew a paddle blade if you leave it in the water.

A pan you can see from orbit
Etosha’s salt pan is a dry lakebed roughly the size of a small country, and for most of the year it holds no water at all. That is what makes the game viewing here work backwards from everywhere else: instead of tracking animals across the park, you sit at one of the springs on the pan’s edge and let the park come to the water. Elephant, oryx, and if the wait is long enough, rhino.

By place — the coast, the capital, the parks
Every place on the site →Namibia prices in two halves, and the gap between them is wide.
A quad bike on the Swakopmund dunes and a twelve-day camping run across the north are both on this site. Nearly everything worth doing sits somewhere between them.
